Is the Day After Thanksgiving the Busiest Day for Plumbers?

The day after Thanksgiving is a historically busy day for plumbers around the United States. Whether it’s a drain clog, an over-stressed garbage disposal or a leaking faucet, the plumbing in your home tends to take a beating after the Thanksgiving festivities. Below is a list of items to inspect once your family and friends have all departed.

Common Foods That Will Clog Your Kitchen Sink Drains

The day after Thanksgiving is known as “Brown Friday” in the plumbing industry because…well because of the amount of wastewater and sewage that tends to cause a problem. One such problem that we at Hudson see every year is clogged kitchen sink drains. Common foods that will cause a clog quicker than any other foods are potatoes, bones, pasta and rice. Have extra trash bags on hand and encourage your guests to scrap their leftover food into the trash rather than the kitchen sink.

More People Means More Laundry Cycles

Plumbers see a surge in washing machine drain clogs the day after Thanksgiving. With more people staying in the home, your typical laundry cycle might double or even triple in some situations. This can create an excessive strain on your drainage system. Be mindful of your laundry cycle throughout the holiday. Try to space out each cycle to prevent sewer line backups.

Friends and Family Are Using the Shower

Likewise, there might be more people in the home over the Thanksgiving holiday taking baths and showers. On Brown Friday, we tend to get numerous phone calls about leaky faucets and/or clogged drains. You can prevent shower problems by spacing out the shower time and clearing the tub drains of hair and debris between showers.

Uptick in Accidental Toilet Clogs

With children in the home, it’s not uncommon for toys or other items to get flushed accidentally (or even on purpose!). At Hudson, we recommend keeping your toilet lids closed and shutting your bathroom doors to decrease the likelihood of unwanted items being flushed down the toilets.
