Common Causes of Toilet Issues

There are a number of things that can go wrong with toilets, from a running toilet that’s wasting water to leaks and a toilet not flushing. There are a number of common causes of issues that may require toilet repair, including the following.

Clogs in the Pipes

Clogs in the pipe can mean the toilet won’t flush, which can be problematic. While a plunger may help release minor clogs, if the clogs are bad enough, drain cleaning will be needed. If the clog is deep enough in the pipes, it could end up clogging other toilets in the home, too, so fast repairs will be needed.

Worn Flapper Valve

A worn flapper valve will end up letting water go from the tank into the bowl. This can make it seem like the toilet is constantly running, and it will end up wasting a significant amount of water, which can lead to increased water bills for the home.

Worn Washer Bolts

Washer bolts are used to keep the toilet from leaking. If they start to wear out, leaks can occur, leading to puddles of water around the toilet. New washers can fix this issue, but it may be difficult to replace them because the water getting past the washers can damage the bolts over time.

Loose Connections

Any loose connections within the toilet can lead to issues. Loose bolts, for instance, can lead to leaking outside the toilet. A loose chain inside the toilet can make it more difficult to flush, which can make it seem like the toilet isn’t flushing properly. Connections will need to be tested to see which ones need to be fixed to correct the issue.

Broken Tank

If there is a crack in the tank, or it is otherwise broken, it’s going to lead to a leak. This can end up causing significant water damage around and under the toilet if it isn’t corrected quickly. At the first sign of a broken tank, it’s important to have it fixed.

Can You DIY Toilet Repairs?

If toilet repair is needed, it may be possible to do some minor repairs on your own, but it’s always better to call in the pros for help if you aren’t sure what to do. If the toilet doesn’t stop running, check to make sure the flapper is able to fully sit in the opening and cover it. If not, a toilet running fix may be to loosen the cable holding the flapper so that it can sit properly after the toilet is flushed.  Another toilet running fix may be to replace the flapper if it’s older or damaged. In most cases, though, it’s better to have an expert take a look and make sure the repair is done right.
